water cooler

With the MQB platform capable of generating large amounts of power, with almost a 30% increase in performance achievable with intakes, exhausts, intercoolers and software, an often overlooked area for improvement is the water cooling system of the factory engine

With such a significant increase in performance that is easy to achieve, it is easy to understand why the OEM water cooler has a hard time exchanging heat from the engine and now exhaust heat from the integrated engine header. It is not uncommon for these engines when 90°C is showing on the gauge to actually be running above 100°C to 110°C during a snappy ride if properly logged.

More importantly, during a jagged ride, while the engine's water coolant temperature is getting high, the engine oil is also getting hotter. It's not uncommon for engine oil temperatures to rise to over 130°C-145°C during a jagged drive and the car struggles to bring the temperatures down without wasting much time. This is because there is no factory engine oil cooler, so the factory water cooler has a lot of work to do.

PERFORMANCE TESTS: CSF all-aluminum triple pass water cooler & quadruple pass DSG cooler on 500hp Tracktool MK7R

The customer reported that when measured correctly, the engine water temperatures were showing regularly in the 110c and even up to 130c on the track. In addition engine oil temperatures were a major concern as they went up to 130°C within 3 fast laps and then ramped up uncontrollably by 130°C to over 140°C the customer then had to drive between 4500RPM-5500RPM to get a 'safe' Maintain oil and water temperature.

With CSF's cooler upgrade this is no longer the case, tests have shown that the engine's water temperature does not exceed 100.5 c. The engine oil temperature is also below 125c on this test, which the customer reported seeing a drop of up to 10c-15c. Previously the engine oil temperature would rise to 130°C within 2-3 fast laps and then ramp up uncontrollably to well over 130°C - 140°C plus to stay below 130°C.

Let's take a look at the stock cooler.

The OE cooler :

  • 1-row 26mm core
  • single pass
  • 7mm rib height

The series cooler consists of a single-row, 26 mm thick core and runs with only one passage of the cooling water. This is a very thin core that doesn't use the available space efficiently, which contributes to the cooling issues. After months of development, we came up with a solution that maximizes efficiency and available space while retaining all factory mounting locations, hose locations, etc. for a direct replacement part.

The all-aluminum, three-pass CSF triple water cooler.

      • 2-row 42mm B-Tube core
      • Triple pass design
      • 6.5mm rib height
      • CNC-machined Quick-Connect fittings
      • Race style drain valve
      • Drop-In-Fit no adjustments necessary

The CSF all-aluminum triple pass water cooler uses a 2-row 42mm core. By utilizing the full space between condenser and radiator, core depth has been maximized and compatibility with large aftermarket intercoolers has been proven. The B-Tube design maximizes tube efficiency in all areas, this tube design is stronger than 0-tubes, less material can be used for lighter and more efficient heat transfer, while the surface area inside the tube is increased by 15% over 0-tubes.

The triple pass design means the coolant passes through the core three times before exiting, maximizing the time it takes for the cooler to heat exchange for the coldest exit temperature. Finally, the 6.5mm fin height has been optimized in CSF's own wind tunnel, so that all possibilities are fully exploited in the development of the ultimate MQB water cooler.

Fits on: 8V A3 1.8TSi, 8V S3, 8S TT (2.0TSi), MK7 Golf GTi, MK7 Golf R, 5F Leon Cupra, 5E Octavia vRS

DSG cooler

The cooling ineffectiveness of the DSG cooler becomes clear after examining the OEM cooling system design.

The factory coolant exits the engine block into a Y-piece where it splits into the engine water cooler and then the DSG cooler. This DSG cooler is surprisingly small and does not have the size or efficiency to exchange heat before exiting the cooler and leading to the DSG's oil/water heat exchanger.

When the engine coolant is hot and the DSG oil is hot, which is the case when cars are run at higher than stock or on the track, this hot coolant now has little to no cooling effect on the DSG oil and the DSG temperatures start to rise.

If the oil temperature is high, there is a risk that the DSG will be damaged. To avoid damage, the DSG starts to reduce torque, increase shift times and in extreme circumstances, gears can be lost. In the worst case, this can lead to costly damage to the transmission.

After extensive analysis and development, the CSF has developed a Quadruple Pass DSG cooler that offers increased cooling performance over the OEM cooler in a number of areas.

OEM cooler:

        • 26mm 1-row core

        • single pass design

CSF quadruple pass DSG cooler

        • 2-row 42mm core with CSF B-Tube technology

        • Quadruple pass design coolant passes through the radiator four times

        • Removable stone guard

        • Increase in flow area = 42%.

        • Increase in heat dissipation = 36%.

        • Fits both right side (DSG) and left side (auxiliary engine water).

The CSF Quadruple Pass DSG cooler uses a 2-row 42mm core that utilizes all available space. The B-Tube design maximizes tube efficiency in all areas, this tube design is stronger than 0-tubes, less material can be used for lighter and more efficient heat transfer, while the surface area inside the tube is increased by 15% over 0-tubes.

The quadruple pass design means that the coolant passes through the core four times before exiting, maximizing the time the cooler has to exchange heat for the coldest exit temperature.

This unique design results in a 42% increase in flow area and a 36% increase in heat dissipation. Helps keep DSG temperatures consistently cooler for longer. The cooler also comes complete with a removable stone guard for improved longevity against stone chips.
