A world first - a full carbon turbo inlet for RS3/TTRS. We have invested heavily for months in developing an inlet that leaves no room for compromise. VOLUME - FLOW QUALITY - TEMPERATURE are the 3 main design criteria we wanted to meet.
1) VOLUME:
Inlet Diameter - Eventuri 103mm : Original 72mm.
Outlet Diameter - Eventuri 74mm : Original 56.4mm.
Obviously, the Eventuri inlet has a significantly larger inner volume with significantly larger inner diameters, which opens up the flow path to the turbo.
2) Flow Quality: Just having a large internal volume is no good unless the flow path also allows for smooth airflow to the turbo. By using high temperature prepreg carbon fiber we managed to achieve a smooth inner surface. In contrast, the Original Equipment and other aftermarket inlets are all machined from cast aluminum, resulting in a rough internal surface. This, combined with the smooth curvature of the inlet elbow, results in a flow path that minimizes turbulence.
3) TEMPERATURE: The final criterion was to minimize heat conduction into the airflow. The inlet is directly connected to the turbo and thus immediately transfers heat as soon as the turbo starts to glow. Our system uses a machined flange that connects to the turbo and then a silicone coupler with an integrated thermal spacer to prevent the carbon inlet for the RS3/TTRS from making direct contact with the turbo. This barrier combined with the low passage thickness of the carbon fiber results in less heat transfer to the airflow.
Flow bench testing
We performed flow bench tests using a Superflow SF-1020 to measure the maximum possible flow at a pressure drop of 28" H2O. The tests were performed on the same day under controlled conditions using the same test fixture for each arch. The results show, how restrictive the original inlet is we have improved from 42% with the stock flange to 58% at max flow with the larger GTX flange As the RHD version needs clearance for the brake fluid reservoir we have a conch on the side which reduces the volume of the tube but still maintains a significant increase in flow rate over stock, with a 52% increase over the original inlet through the GTX flange.
dyno tests
Our carbon inlet has been independently tested by well-known tuners worldwide. The first results come from BR Performance Netherlands who tested our system on a TTRS with a TTE700 hybrid turbo. The tests were carried out back to back on the same day with the hood closed. They tested the stock airbox against our Stage 3 intake with the original liner, then added our liner for comparison.
