A catch tank is essential on a high-performance vehicle to protect the engine from increased blow-by from the crankcase that accumulates when driving at high power. Excess oil-saturated air flowing back into the intake stream can result in poor performance. Radium Engineering surge tanks feature large 10AN ORB ports, a 4AN ORB drain port, 2-stage oil separators, and an O-ring sealed dipstick.
Advantages :
-Effective increase in octane rating and increased engine performance through cleaner intake air
-Prevents oil from accumulating in the walls of the intake and intercooler systems, throttle body, intake manifold, etc.
-Excessive accumulation of oil can be a sign of engine failure.
-Reduces hydrocarbon emissions
-Capacity: 7 fluid ounces each
details :
These radium catch tank kits are compatible with 1990-2005 Mazda MX-5 Miata with the 1.6L and 1.8L engines. They mount with OEM holes and integrate perfectly with the surrounding components. NOTE : The factory air intake box cannot be used with these kits. Check the installation pictures before ordering.
The kits are not vented to atmosphere (VTA) rated and are therefore emissions and track legal. This closed loop system removes oil and sludge from the PCV gases before sending it to the engine to be burned. A closed circuit also promotes vacuum in the crankcase for optimal performance. In addition, closed systems prevent unwanted oil vapors from entering the interior. The built-in dipsticks in the collection tanks allow easy inspection of the accumulated liquid. No cutting, drilling or permanent modifications to the vehicle are required.
When purchasing the single catch tank kit, there are enough components to connect it to the PCV or crankcase side of the engine (see below for more info). Purchasing the Dual Catch Tank Kit will isolate all of the engine's vents for optimal performance.
When used on the PCV side, the catch tank runs in line with the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve and retains its factory function. When the intake manifold pressure is close to or greater than atmospheric pressure, the PCV check valve closes, preventing flow through this hose. Conversely, a "metered" vacuum is created in the PCV hose when the engine is idling, cruising, and braking. This normally draws unwanted crankcase fumes, unused fuel and oil sludge into the intake manifold immediately after a high load run. Note: Because the Radium Catch Tanks are pressure tight, they are excellent for this application with boost pressure, allowing connection to the intake manifold.
If the catch tank is used on the crankcase side, it will line up with the crankcase ventilation opening. At low load it is at atmospheric pressure, but when the engine is running at high load (WOT) this hose will experience high flow out of the crankcase. This would normally result in a build up of oil and sludge in the air cleaner intake pipe. Oil builds up in the charge air cooler, reducing the heat exchanger's thermal efficiency and resulting in performance degradation.
